"Electricity provides the means and opportunity for people to safely light their homes, provide for their families, and communicate with loved ones."

World-Wide Need

  • Globally over 1.5 billion people do not have access to electricity.
  • In Kenya 80% of people have cell phones, but only 20% have electricity to charge them. People currently travel hours to charging stations comprised of old car batteries. To conserve power, people must keep their phones off most of the time, greatly diminishing their ability to do business.
  • Cell phones have the potential to drastically improve communication, educational opportunities and provide vital business and farming information such as weather reports and digital banking. Access to electricity means development, education and economic growth for millions of families and businesses across Africa and developing countries around the world. The JikoPower generator has the potential to empower people with an elegant and simple solution.

Health and Environment

  • Kerosene used for lighting and cooking kills 1.5 million people  each year. These deaths are entirely preventable through cleaner technology like LED lights.
  • Traditional cookstoves used in rural communities produce over 190 billion tonnes of CO2 in the atmosphere each year, which contributes to global climate change. Although clean cookstoves have become increasingly prevalent in countries such as Kenya, many people prefer to cook the way their ancestors did and do not see enough benefit to switch over.
  • People are 2.8x more likely to use a clean cookstove if it has a TEG attached, drastically improving their health and reducing the impact on the environment.

Disaster Relief

Relief efforts save millions of lives each year after natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanoes. In the wake of such horrific destruction, access to electricity is vital to finding shelter, connecting with loved ones, and receiving life-saving medical assistance. Mailyn Berko M.D. is an international aid worker who was in Haiti after the earthquake and tsunami. She was incredibly frustrated by the inability to communicate with other medical teams and the local hospital.  Everyone seemed to have a cellphone, but without a charge, they were useless and it cost people their lives.

Empowerment

Climbing the economic ladder in rural and impoverished communities is incredibly challenging. Access to electricity is the means by which people access opportunities they would not have otherwise, and become aware of better and more productive ways of doing things. JikoPower is excited to be running a pilot program in Kenya focused on women's economic empowerment later this year.

Portable Energy for You

Record every adventure and never worry about charging again. We know that when hiking and camping every inch and ounce matters. We also know that true solutions aren't dependent on the weather and never interfere with your plans.

With JikoPower, you constantly have access to a charging solution that isn't going to take up half your bag or let you down if the weather changes. At less than two pounds, our generators are a simple solution that won't slow you down.  They can be easily used with any camp stove or fire.

Empowering Energy for the World

Access to electricity in the home drastically improves people's quality of life. People can use cell phones more, which enables them to grow their businesses, connect with people world wide, and access resources, information, and education. Clean energy also gives families and children the ability to effectively use LED lights in place of harmful kerosene lamps or wooden fire. Collecting firewoods will never a duty of kids.

LED's allow children to study at night and parents to work later without damaging their health or environment.
